Sea Cliff, New York
Approx. Population 5,066
Sea Cliff is located in Nassau County.
Sea Cliff is a charming, one square mile village which sits atop a bluff 120 feet above sea level, with an outstanding view of Hempstead Harbor. In 1871, the Grand Metropolitan Campground Association purchased 240 acres in Sea Cliff as a retreat for Methodist families from Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens. During summertime revival meetings, these families would live in rented tents and attend services at a huge 5000 seat tabernacle. By 1900 interest in revivalism faded but Sea Cliff had become a major east coast resort. Vacationers began arriving by the thousands on steamboats and trains, enjoying the many social activities at the fine large hotels that had sprung up along the cliff and shore line. As the automobile became more popular, people tended to travel farther for their holidays. The village remained, however, and today many 19th century Victorian houses survive to give Sea Cliff its special character.
Sea Cliff is a wonderful place for a family outing. Its old world atmosphere and quaint charm is relaxing and nostalgic.
